What is a gopher?

If, while registering, I apply as a gopher / steward, does this automatically mean I will be one at the convention?

No, it does not. Due to the expected very high amount of gopher registrations, and a limit of only (around) 80 gophers + stewards, we will have to reject at least a few registrations. Don't let this keep you from applying though: we will try to find the people best suited for the job. But don't think "I'll get my money back anyway" and then get angry at us if you aren't accepted as a gopher either: nobody ever said you'd be guaranteed the 'job' by simply registering.

How do I sign up to be a gopher / help out at the convention?

During the first step of the registration procedure you can select to sign up as a gopher. If you do this an extra form (the Gopher Preferences Form, or GPF) will need to be filled in after registration. This form will be mailed to you when you have been selected as one of our volunteers.

I am underage, but I want to help out. Is that possible?

It depends on the person, although the minimum age is 16. Just email us, and we will try to decide whether you are suitable or not. In the past, we have also had some very hard-working underage gophers.

Do I have to register and pay beforehand? I will get the money refunded anyway...

Yes you do. This is to prevent gophers from walking in without paying, and leaving their jobs to other gophers. Don't worry though, we very rarely decide not to refund a gopher. All that matters is that you do what you can!

When will the gopher meeting before the convention be?

There will be two meetings, the so-called Gopher Orientation Meetings. One of them will usually be around two weeks before the convention, the other will be at the day before the convention at the actual convention grounds. If you were accepted as one of our volunteers, you will be informed by mail. In 2011, this will be August 13. And August 25.

What if I cannot make it to the gopher meeting?

If you cannot make it to one of the two meetings, then we will ask you for a reason. Please understand that the people without a good reason to not go to a meeting, will be scrapped from being a volunteer/gopher.

Where can I sleep as a gopher?

Basically, gophers have the same choices as visitors have. You can find them on the accommodations page.

My question is not answered here. What can I do now?

Maybe you can find the answer on the general gopher info page, or the FAQ on the forums. If not please send us your questions using our contact form, or ask around in the appropriate forum. You are sure to get an answer as soon as possible! We always try to answer our mails within the next five working days.
