The signups for the Abunai! 2016 AMV competition have opened! For rules, guidelines and more information, click here.
This year we will have some sweet cosplay competitions for you to participate in. As usual we will have the Cosplay Masquerade: a starter-level competition where you can try if cosplay competitions are something for you! If you don’t want to try it alone, you can also find a partner or a group to enter with.
We have a separate “class” for more advanced competitors, so if you just want to show your costume and you have some experience in cosplaying, you can enter this competition as well. You’ll be judged in a different class from the starters. You can participate solo, as a duo or as a group.
Want to try something more elaborate? Have a go at the Cosplay Act competition. This event focuses on your act and not so much on your costume. So, if you have more confidence in your acting, go for this! Groups (2+ people) are more than welcome in this competition.
If that’s not enough for you and if you want to be judged on the complete package, then we have another challenge for you: try the Clara Clow Cosplay Competition (C4) prelims. Here your act is 60% of your total score and the costumes make up for the other 40%. It is the ultimate challenge! But remember: Abunai! is only the first round. If you win, you’ll be able to participate in the final round against international teams! And you won’t be doing this alone, as this competition is only for teams of 2 people.
This all is nice and stuff, but you don’t have to go on stage to have a chance at winning. The hallway competition will return as well. Just go to the judging room and have a nice talk with the judges, who will ask you some questions and give you the same judging experience as backstage at the other competitions. We have selected special judges for this, so we can say for certain that they don’t bite.
But… What about the European Cosplay (Eurocos) Preliminaries?
The Eurocos organisation decided that they don’t want to have multiple participants from one country anymore from this year on. That is why Abunai! doesn’t have the European Cosplay Preliminaries this year (instead this year’s edition will be hosted at Anime 2016). We’ll keep you updated on next year.
Please read the message below carefully, as it contains information about:
– the opening date and time of Abunai!’s Ticket Sales
– a small change in the hotel reservation process
(a Dutch version of this news message can be found here)
The start of this year’s ticket sales have been delayed considerably due to various reasons. The main reason being of course the change in hotel reservations, which is now being done by NH Koningshof (you can read about this HERE); the situation required some technical changes, but also a new procedure to be set up with NH Koningshof.
Now that these things are in their final stage, we can safely announce the opening date and time for our online ticket booth. This year the online ticket sales for Abunai! 2016: “Beyond the stars” will open on Wednesday May 11th at 20:00 o’clock.
We’ve already opened up the registration page, so that you can get more information on the available options, as well as the prices for 2016.
The second part of this announcement covers the hotel room procedure. Previously we announced that you would receive a hotel reservation form automatically after completing payment on your ticket sales. However this would disadvantage visitors who can’t pay right away, as well as foreign visitors (since our only instant payment option at the moment is iDeal, which is exclusive to the Netherlands).
We’ve decided to change the moment the reservation form is sent. Instead of sending it after completing your payment, the reservation form will now be sent to you when you place your ticket reservation (regardless of whether it is paid immediately or not). We believe this change to be more fair and an improvement for the overall process.
A few weeks ago we posted a message informing you that we will no longer be offering sleeping accommodations in our online ticket booth. Following this decision we received
some questions about the details of these changes and what the new procedure will be like: how will you obtain a hotel room at NH Koningshof now?
We’ve spent the last few weeks finishing the details with NH Hoteles and have created a separate page on our website with additional information about the change, including
information on how to place a room reservation. You can find this information HERE.
Please note that our ticket sales or the hotel room sales have not started yet; we’re still making preparations for this, but will make an announcement as soon as a final
date is set.
Ever since Abunai! changed venues and moved to NH Koningshof we’ve offered accomodations as part of the deal. It made perfect sense too, the convention center hosted a hotel, so why not combine the two and offer accommodations along with your visitor ticket. Initially this only consisted of hotel rooms on the premesis, but later on this was expanded to other NH hotels and even to the neighbouring group accomodation, De Buitenjan.
However this year we’ll make some major changes in this setup, so please make sure to read the message below thoroughly.
Over the years there have been several issues with the hotel room sales; some caused by external factors, other by system problems or human error. More than once has this resulted in a negative experience for both you, the visitor, and us, as convention organisers. This has been a difficult challenge to us for years and we’ve discussed the issue at hand with various different parties and visitors as well and have come to a conclusion in this.
As of this year Abunai! will no longer offer sleeping accomodations for sale in our own online ticket booth. Instead the hotel rooms will be sold directly by the organisation best suited for the job: the hotel itself. We will provide a sign up link on our website which will allow you to place a reservation at NH Koningshof directly. Please be advised that there is no point in contacting the hotel before this link is available and official reservations open. Reservations received before this time will not be processed.
We will book a portion of the hotel before the hotel room sales open for our own crew and affiliated parties, however this is no different from previous years; these people need to be on site because they are needed to help keep the convention running, and they need to stay close by to do so effectively.
We will also no longer be making arrangements for the neighbouring group accomodation De Buitenjan. If you wish to place a reservation here, you will need to contact them
We know that this approach is a major change from previous years but at the same time we feel this is the best route to take. We are still making preparations for this step, so currently we can give no final date yet when both ticket registration and hotel room sales will open. As soon as we have an update on this, we will inform you through our website and social media.
If you have any questions on this, feel free to contact us and we’ll do our best to answer them.
Have you ever wanted to host a panel or workshop at Abunai!Con? Well that can be arranged! We just added an Event Submission Form to our website. All you have to do is fill it out as much as possible and we’ll take a look at your event and maybe you’ll be part of the action packed schedule of Abunai 2016!
You can find the submission form here
This weekend the largest gaming event of the Benelux, FirstLook Festival, will be held at De Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. This year will mark the debut of FirstLook’s very own cosplay section, Cosville, hosted by our colleagues of Stichting J-POP (www.animecon.nl) and the increasingly popular weblog The Sushi Times.
Some of you might still have a sugar rush, but sadly Abunai! 2015: Sugar, spice and everything nice is over. We would like to thank everyone who assisted in the preparation and execution of our festival. Over 4500(?) people have visited Abunai! this year, and we’ve received a lot of positive and constructive feedback. If you still have some feedback about this year’s convention, suggestions for improvement or new ideas you’d love to see, feel free to contact us at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Meanwhile we’re already making preparations for next year’s Abunai! which will once again be held at NH Koningshof from Friday August 26th till Sunday August 28th. In 2016 we’ll be focusing on two things that are out of this world. We hope to see you all again next year at ‘Abunai! 2016: Beyond the stars!“
Today the last remaining tickets for Sunday August 30th were sold, meaning that both the Saturday and Sunday tickets are now officially sold out. These options are no longer available for purchase. It is also not possible to purchase these tickets at the door.
There are still some Friday tickets left, however there is a chance they will be sold out as well before the convention starts. If you are planning on visiting on Friday, we recommend you make a reservation in our online ticket booth beforehand, which you can pay upon check-in.
Heads-up for everyone who did not register for a Sunday ticket yet: Ticket sales for the Sunday are nearing it’s sold-out point. If you did not get your ticket yet, don’t wait too long!
If a day gets sold out you won’t be able to buy tickets at the door for that day either. So if you want to be ensured access to the convention, do reserve your tickets online now!
